Freya Harrild was crowned a British judo champion in her age and weight group a year after narrowly missing out on a title.

Harrild (under-44k cadet) won a silver last year, but in Sheffield she beat all of her opponents to get her hands on gold.

She was one of three members of the Parkwood Judo Club to compete at the British Judo Association 2013 British Championships on Sunday.

Freya’s sister Shannara was also competing, in the under-57 category, with 29 other players and the standards were high.

But she put in one of the best performances in a tough group to beat all but one of her opponents and end with a deserved bronze.

The third player was Jake Popplewell, who went into the championships with little experience but had a good day, winning one of his fights and fighting well in his others.

Coach Robin Fryatt said: "All coaches and members at Parkwood Judo Club are proud of all their players that competed and are especially proud to have another British champion – our first girl to achieve this."
