A pedestrian has died after being hit by a car.

The 69-year-old man from the local area was crossing Four Elms Hill close to Chattenden Lane, near Hoo, at around 6pm yesterday.

Tributes were left by the crossing

He was hit by a black Peugeot 208 GTI and died at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

A 39-year-old man from Rochester was arrested in connection with the collision and remains in custody.

The eastbound carriageway remained closed while officers investigated until around 6am this morning.

Mick Crinnion, of Main Road, said: "I was just heading out to B&Q with my son in his van when we heard a really loud bang.

"We looked over and there were cars in the middle of the road.

The man died at the scene

"We ran down the steps to see what had happened and I saw a black car by the house with the white bit at the bottom that had its bonnet up, and then I saw the man in the road.

"Someone called 999 and they were told to do CPR. A neighbour went and got a blanket for him.

"It's really terrible. We've tried to get something done about this road for ages, people come flying up here."

Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are appealing for any witnesses to come forward who may have seen the collision or the vehicle travelling in the Medway towns area beforehand.

In particular anyone who has CCTV, doorbell, or dash cam footage of either the vehicle or the collision itself should contact SCIU on 01622 798538, email sciu.td@kent.police.uk or submit information using the Major Incident Public Portal quoting reference HW/FM/93/20.
