Southeastern also warned customers to expect delays.

“The train involved will be on the move as soon as our technicians have confirmed the train can move and the emergency services and response staff are clear of the line,” a spokesman said it a tweet.

“We don’t have an estimate for how long this will be but hopefully won’t be much longer.”

Disruption was anticipated to continue until late into Sunday evening, with the incident reported at 6.25pm.

Trains between London Victoria and Sittingbourne were delayed, diverted to London Cannon Street or cancelled at short notice, National Rail has announced.

National Rail added: "If you’ve been affected by what happened on the network today, there is always someone to talk to. You can contact the Samaritans on 116 123 from any phone for a confidential chat."
