The death of a man whose body was found below Sun Pier in Chatham is no longer being treated as suspicious.

The 46-year-old was found in the mud on August 3, sparking a police investigation.

A man was arrested on suspicion of murder the same night but released the next day without charge.

Emergency services on the scene

Police later said the death was being treated as “unexplained” when a post-mortem examination was inconclusive.

But today the force has confirmed it is no longer treating the death as suspicious and a report is now being prepared for the coroner.

The man, whose identity has not been released by police, was found after a 999 call just before 9pm when someone spotted the body below the pier near Staples car park in Medway Street.

Witnesses described seeing the emergency services pulling a body from the water using a cradle.

Police and a coastguard team remained at the scene until the early hours of the following day.
