Plans for a gym in a large empty unit at an out-of-town shopping centre are back on track.

Earlier this year it was announced that JD Gyms had pulled out of a plan to take over space at the former Toys R Us store at Horsted Retail Park, near Chatham.

Developers told KentOnline that they were in negotiation with another leisure operator to step in and take over the space which has been empty for five years.

But now the low-cost fitness chain is on board again and hoping to open by the end of the year.

Ahead of the launch, JD’s is offering a raft of membership deals.

Under the mantra, Fitness Just Got Serious, gym users are being invited to register online today for just £5 with no contract or joining fee.

When launched, JD Gyms Chatham will be a state-of-the-art facility, with 100s of pieces of equipment, a huge studio hosting about 100 classes a month, vast free weights and cardio areas, and a dedicated glute training studio.

There will also be a boxing area, boot camps, JD burn classes, luxury changing rooms and saunas.

Free car parking is also available at the Maidstone Road site which is also home to an Aldi supermarket, Home Bargains and a KFC drive-thru diner.

The toy shop giant went into in administration February 2018 and closed in April the same year.

Initial plans had included a swimming pool, but this was dropped as developers went back to the drawing board.

The neighbouring sports centre at the Holiday Inn has a pool.

Last year JD Gyms opened its first branch in Kent at Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre.
