People have been having their say on plans to turn an orchard into a major new development.

Residents in Rainham have received feedback forms concerning proposals to build 1,250 residential units on the farmland off Pump Lane.

The scheme also includes a primary school, a 60-bed extra care facility, an 80-bed care home, a village hall and green including a children’s play area.

A public exhibition of the plans took place over the weekend at Holy Trinity Church Hall, Twydall Lane, Gillingham.

The initial proposal entered earlier this year, called a scoping agreement, attracted more than 1,000 objections on a community-led petition.

The site's design extends to parts of Lower Bloors Lane to the east and Lower Twydall Lane to the west.

It would be bordered by the railway to the south.

The site is currently being used as orchards.

The plans have been put forward by AC Goatham & Son, one of the UK’s major fruit farmers.

Residents have been asked to fill out a survey on the plans. A decision is due to be made by the end of September.

A public meeting is due to be held tonight at Holy Trinity Church Hall Tuesday regarding the plans.
