Around 300 people marched through the centre of Chatham on Saturday to show their support for the people of Gaza.

The group, carrying placards and flags, assembled at Riverside next to the bus station at 2:30pm.

They then walked along the Brook and back through the High St to the end of Military Road.

Organiser Steve Wilkins said “We are doing this because of everybody’s horror at the appalling death toll and the fact that our government is supporting Israel in something that is clearly unacceptable.”

They held a rally with several speakers including Naushabah Khan the Labour Party and representatives from the Trade Unions, Socialist Party and Palestine solidarity Campaign.

Mr Wilkins, 62, said: “This was a magnificent turnout for a protest organised with only a few days notice and shows the level of anger at what has been happening in Gaza."

The march was organised by trade unionists, Stop the War Coalition, Friends of Al-Aqsa and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign.

Police officers were in attendance to facilitate peaceful protest and a spokesman said there are not believed to have been any incidents.
