Chairs and glasses were thrown in a brawl between England and Wales fans in a Rochester pub after the Euro 2016 match last night.

The incident came at the end of a day when the pubs had been busy with lots of people watching the group stages of Euro 2016. The match started at 2pm and many people stayed late into the evening to after England’s narrow 2-1 victory.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “There was an incident at the pub between fans from England and Wales. It took place in the pub garden. The police were called and dealt with it.

“The pub will continue to show England Euro 2016 matches, and will however have door staff on for future England games to prevent any further issues.”

He added: “We were actually very quiet during the football and the groups that were watching it were no problems. The incident occurred at 8pm in the evening after the game had finished when groups entered that had been watching the football in other venues. The groups involved had already been refused service.”

Police were called to the Golden Lion on the high street just after 8.05pm. Officers arrived at the Wetherspoon's venue within the next 10 minutes, but those involved had dispersed.

An eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said there was about 18 people involved in a fight.

She said: "It looked like two boys sat at the same table started it and then it just kicked off. They threw chairs and glasses, it was scary."

Nobody at the scene wished to report any offences. Nobody was seriously injured.

An hour later, officers were asked to help remove a number of people from the pub following reports of glasses being thrown in the beer garden. No offences were reported, nobody was injured and no arrests were made.

Chief Superintendent Alison Roden of Kent Police said: "While the vast majority of football supporters are enjoying Euro 2016 in a safe and responsible manner, there are still a minority intent on causing trouble and ruining it for others.

"Our officers have been patrolling town centre locations throughout the tournament to provide reassurance and prevent disorder. We will not tolerate any antisocial or criminal behaviour that may arise by people drinking too much or letting their emotions get the better of them so I would urge people to know their limits and behave responsibly."

A man was arrested on suspicion of assault after a man was hit around the head with a bar stool at The Crown.

Police officers were called just before 8.50pm to reports of a disturbance at the pub in Rochester High Street. The victim suffered a cut to his head.

A 27-year-old man from Chatham was arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage and remains in custody. A 31-year-old man was also arrested but released without charge.
