A pub which closed last month as a result of financial pressure on the landlords is to be sold at auction.

The Barge, at Layfield Road, Gillingham, is described as having potential for conversion or redevelopment. It is for sale at a guide price of £140,000 to £150,000.

The popular live music venue, which has hosted artists Ellie Goulding, Jamie Johnson and almost every Medway musician of recent years, ceased trading on March 17.

Landlords Charlotte Robinson and Nat Reagon-Welch said insurmountable financial pressures forced their hand as the pub was repossessed the next day.

The auction catalogue said the building has extensive bar areas to front, side and rear, a central servery, kitchen and men’s and women’s toilets.

It also has a back garden while accommodation upstairs has a living room, kitchen, three bedrooms and shower room.

The Barge will go under the hammer on Tuesday, May 3, at the Clive Emson conference centre, Maidstone.

The Methodist Church in Station Road, Rainham, is to be sold at the same auction and could be converted into flats or houses.

It is described by Clive Emson Auctioneers as a “substantial detached building” with the possibility for "conversion or redevelopment into residential units".

It is to go under the hammer with a guide price of up to £200,000.

The 3,000 sq ft building has two halls, an extension, meeting room, store room, kitchen and toilets, with parking.
