Youngsters from a Medway school held a virtual baking competition which was judged by a former Great British Bake Off winner.

David Atherton, who won the Channel 4 show last year picked the winner from a selection of pupils from King's Rochester preparatory and senior school.

The children were set a challenge to produce 12 identical cupcakes over the course of a week and had to send in two pictures showing their creations - depicting the cakes whole and cut in half.

Preparatory teacher Laura George arranged the competition after reaching out to the GBBO team on Twitter.

She said: “I was so excited that David agreed to help, I know the pupils are super excited too.

"The aim of the challenge is to keep our focus on developing well rounded pupils, the lockdown is an ideal time to try new things and learn new skills."

Mrs George was joined by David and head teacher Tom Morgan to judge the competition.

In the end, 11-year-old Jack Seagar won the bake off with his chocolate centred burger cakes.

The youngster was praised by bake off winner David, who said: "There were some really, really impressive cupcakes, I particularly like the creativity and I would like to see a few of the bakers apply for junior Bake Off next time - well done Jack."
