Councillors will discuss whether Uber has a case to answer in court for operating in part of Kent.

The company's operation in Medway has caused controversy, especially among local taxi firms.

It will be discussed at tonight's full council meeting at the St George's Centre, Pembroke Road, Chatham, from 7pm.

This follows a council-funded legal investigation into whether the app driven taxi hailing service could legally operate in Medway, after a motion was passed by Cllr Dan McDonald (Lab) in April.

The Gillingham South representative will tell how the review suggests Uber could be taken to court and will ask the council to consider proceeding with “cease and desist” actions.

Currently the digital company works in the area under a ‘Greater London’ licence issued by Transport for London.

But the Medway Licensed Taxi Drivers' Association (MLTDA) has questioned whether this is lawful.

Cllr McDonald will state the findings of the legal advice.

Then, according to the meeting agenda, Cllr McDonald will ask the council to, "proceed with the appropriate legal action against Uber" and work with MLTDA.

The public will also be asking questions about the issue.

Wigmore resident Ian Walton will ask the portfolio holder for planning, economic growth and regulation, Cllr Jane Chitty (Con), for the legal report to be shared with MLTDA as it feels the drivers have not been consulted enough.

Nigel Jackson, of Strood, will ask the council to publicly show its support for licensed taxi drivers.

Mike Smith, of Twydall ,will ask council leader Cllr Alan Jarrett (Con) to confirm whether Uber is operating unlawfully in Medway.
