Graffiti promoting a group who aim to make cannabis legal appeared on a sign at The Strand.

Big, black letters were sprayed on to a sign near the mini golf course that advertised two Instagram accounts that are supporting the legalisation of cannabis.

The writing appeared last Wednesday and read: “insta @wesquashuk @THEDANK #DANK COLONY.”

The owner of the first Instagram account claimed to be unaware of the graffiti but was pleased for the support.

A statement said: “#we squashuk doesn’t graffiti but our followers may have decided it was a good place to spread the word.

“We are part of the movement to legalise cannabis in the UK.”

Councillor for Gillingham North, Andy Stamp, said it was important to have graffiti removed quickly to avoid it becoming part of the environment.

He told the Medway Messenger: “It’s the broken window effect – we need to keep on top of it because if it stays it becomes part of the environment and acceptable so it’s important to get it moved ASAP.

“I wouldn’t say it is a problem in lower Gillingham. There was a spate a few years ago but the council are very efficient at getting it removed.

“If needs to be reported quickly, especially if it’s offensive or racist.

“If this is promoting legalising cannabis then I’m not comfortable with that.”

The graffiti was removed by Monday.
