Women in Medway are being urged to make a date to join Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life next year.

Organisers of the UK’s largest women-only fundraising event series have announced the event will be held on Sunday, May 22 in the Towns.

However, this year, there will be a change of venue.

The 5k race, which raises money for research into all 200 types of cancer, will not start from the Castle Gardens in Rochester, but is being held on the Great Lines Heritage Park, in Gillingham.

It is hoped the new venue will offer participants a new experience and mean less disruption for residents, following road closure challenges experienced in Rochester.

Sarah-Jane Winding, Race for Life event manager for Gillingham, said: “We are asking women to mark the event date in their diaries and invite their mums, daughters, sisters, friends and colleagues to take part with them.

“Race for Life has an unforgettable atmosphere with women of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness abilities coming together to make a positive difference to the lives of people touched by cancer.

“They motivate and inspire each other to complete the 5k route with many simply walking round, chatting and having fun.

“It’s really important women mark the date on their calendars now and note the new venue for 2016.”

Race for Life is a women-only series of events which raises millions of pounds every year for life-saving research into all cancers - helping men, women and children across the county.

The money raised goes to fund Cancer Research UK’s crucial work.

Ms Wnding added: “Cancer Research UK pioneers life-saving research and thanks to our supporters, we’ve helped double survival rates in the last 40 years. But we can’t stop here. More than one in three of us will develop cancer. We need the continued support of everyone in Medway to help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.”
