Police carried out an early morning raid on a town centre pub as part of investigations into suspected drug dealing.

Officers were seen smashing their way into the historic King's Head in Rochester High Street at about 7am.

A resident who lives nearby was in bed when she heard a loud commotion outside.

The 54-year-old, who did not want to be named, said: "I heard dogs barking and really loud banging. I thought one of the shops may have been broken into."

Another passer-by said: "There were police everywhere, about five police cars. There was a lot of running round."

Police spokesman James Walker said: "On the morning of May 12, Kent Police officers executed a pre-planned warrant a property in Rochester High Street.

"As part of enquiries, a 28-year-old man from Rochester was arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of class A drugs and cannabis.

"He was also arrested on suspicion of an assault which took place inside a private address in Rochester on 15 April. He remains in custody as enquiries continue."

Hours later a workman was hastily boarding up a side door of the pub which is also used as a bed and breakfast.

The pub is due to reopen on Monday.
