A driver who sped off after leaving an active pensioner fighting for his life should "see what they have done" and come forward, says the victim's granddaughter.

It is more than three weeks since 85-year-old Thomas Davis was almost killed in a hit-and-run on the A2 at Rainham.

The brave pensioner has been fighting for his life in hospital since being knocked down as he crossed London Road after attending a dinner.

As police continue to look for the driver of a car that failed to stop, Mr Davis' devoted granddaughter Nicole Sawhney appealed again for people to come forward with information.

She said his family are desperate for the driver to be found and want justice for her grandfather.

Miss Sawhney, 31, said: "Whoever did this should see what they have done to him. My grandad is extremely lucky to be alive."

Mr Davis, who is a keen cyclist, suffered nine broken ribs, fractured vertebrae, bleeding on his brain and severe internal bruising when he was knocked down at about 11.20pm on Friday, April 11.

Miss Sawhney visits him in hospital every day and has organised a rota of friends and relatives to ensure he always has visitors.

On the night he was knocked down, Mr Davies was making his way to the Premier Inn off Maidstone Road, Rainham, after being dropped off following the annual dinner of the Polhill Cycling Club in Upchurch, which he founded.

He still cycled regularly and his family are convinced that his fit and active lifestyle is the main reason he is still alive.

"I don't think anyone else of his age would have survived," said Miss Sawhney.

Mr Davis and his wife of 60 years, Sheila, now live in Lincoln but used to live in Gillingham. He is his wife's carer.

Miss Sawhney said: "We are a big, close-knit family. My uncle even came over from Canada to see him. This has broken us to pieces.

"We are trying to keep him as mentally active as possible, but what we would really want is somebody to come forward who may have seen anything – and the driver to be caught."

Mr Davis' condition is said to be stable. Police have also renewed their appeal for information and witnesses.

Insp Martin Stevens said: "We are continuing to appeal for information. This is very much an ongoing investigation and officers are continuing to make inquiries.

"I would ask anyone who might have information about this collision to contact police, especially anyone who might have seen a small silver-coloured hatchback car on the A2 London Road, Rainham."
