Police and coastguard teams searched for nine hours yesterday for a man spotted in the River Medway.

Officers were called at 10.41am to reports of concern for the welfare of a man in the water at Rochester Esplanade.

The coastguard spent most of the day scouring the river between Rochester bridge, where uniformed offers were stationed, and the Medway City Estate.
