Medway’s only women’s roller derby team will be playing their first competitive match on home turf this weekend.
Roller derby originated in America in the 1930s and is a full-contact sport played on roller skates, with two teams skating in the same direction around a track.
Most skaters have on-track alter egos including Medway mums Melissa ‘HeisenBird’ Woods, Faith ‘Bettsy Bruiser’ Betts and Lucy ‘iShove Lucy’ Watson-Thomas, founded the Rochester Royal Rollers in May 2013.
That lead to the creation of the competitive side Southern Co-Ed Roller Derby which includes a women’s team, Apex Predators, and a men’s team, Weald Warriors, who train every Sunday at the King’s Rochester Sports Centre.
The Apex Predators have their first home game at Medway Park, Gillingham, tomorrow (Saturday), taking on Surrey Rollergirls.
There will be kids competitions, awards and half time entertainment as well as the chance to chat with the skaters, take photos and find out about joining the team.
Limited tickets are available tomorrow on the door for £15 for adults, free for under 14s accompanied by an adult.
Your ticket entitles you to free entry to the official afterparty at Cargo bar in Pier Road, Gillingham.
