Scrummy soprano, Laura Wright, nicknamed so because of her love of rugby and singing, will be joining the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for the Castle Proms later this month.

It will be her first visit to Medway and she said she’s looking forward to sampling some of the local attractions before taking to the stage.

The 25-year-old said: “These kind of concerts, summer concerts, are my favourite thing to do, it’s my favourite time of year.

“For me, it’s the kind of relaxed environment the audience can have, they can bring a picnic along and have a drink. It’s a really lovely patriotic feeling without being over the top.”

Laura’s career took off after winning the BBC Radio 2 Chorister of the Year in 2005 when she was just 15.

“I enjoyed singing that genre when I was younger,” she said. “Because I won that I was thrown more into that world, my voice suited it and I get more excitement and enjoyment out of it than any other kind of music.”

She has performed all over the world, with a full orchestra on the Great Wall of China, as well as at the Olympic Stadium, Twickenham Stadium, Prince Harry’s Invictus Games and in front of The Queen.

As well as singing, Laura is also passionate about sport. She plays rugby for Rossyln Park RFC in Wandsworth, London, and has recently been made an ambassador for Sports Aid.

Her 2014 album, Sound of Strength, was created with the help of sports psychologist Dr Costas Karageorghis, who worked with Laura to create a unique sound that emphasises the physical power of music.

“I wanted to bring together the two in a way that feels empowering to the listener,” she said. “When I sing at Twickenham Stadium, I experience the same feelings as the players, anticipation, nervous, and I want to perform my best. The music itself heightens the emotion for the players.”

She is planning on singing some tracks from the album at the concert, but will also be performing new songs.

Joining Laura on stage with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is Jonathan Antoine, who landed a record deal with Simon Cowell after appearing on the sixth series of Britain’s Got Talent.

Laura said: “It will be the first time we’ll be singing together. I’ve had quite a lot of his fans tweeting my on Twitter. It’s nice to get to know another artist’s fan base and them as an artist.”

Laura will perform on Saturday, July 18, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Jonathan Antoine as part of the Castle Proms.

The concert series begins on Wednesday, July 15, with rockers Status Quo, supported by Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel. That concert is sold out.

Peter Andre and Blue take to the stage on Thursday, July 16, supported by The Voice 2014 winner Jermain Jackman.

Grammy Award-winning Billy Ocean will headline on Friday, July 17, with DJ Sara Cox and Cheryl, Mike and Jay formerly of Bucks Fizz.

The Castle Gardens will be open during the day, but will close at 4pm and anyone without a ticket will be asked to leave. Gates will reopen at 4.30pm.
