Good Samaritan's message to family of scooter rider who died in crash in Maidstone Road, Chatham

A good Samaritan who stopped at the scene of a fatal accident wants the victim's family to know that he did not die alone.

Nick Allen says he was the first person on the scene when the unnamed 46-year-old from Chatham lost control of his Yamaha scooter in Maidstone Road on Friday.

The white bike mounted the pavement and hit a roadside sign. Ambulance crews, including the air ambulance, were called at 1.50pm, but they were unable to save him.

Mr Allen said: "I was the first person on the scene to help the poor man. Me and another amazing gentlemen did our utmost to help him but sadly he passed.

"We both kept him relaxed in his final moments. Rest in peace sir and I am sorry I could not do more."

The crash happened near the junction of Bournville Avenue as the man rode from Chatham towards Maidstone,with one witness claiming he was thrown from his bike.

Another man claiming to be his brother-in-law said he was on his way to a hospital appointment because of ongoing liver problems.

Police have not revealed further details about the man and are appealing for witnesses to come forward to help them in their investigation.

A spokesman said: "Officers from the serious collision investigation unit are appealing for any witnesses to a fatal road traffic collision in Maidstone Road, Chatham, on Friday, June 10, to come forward.

"The collision occurred at 1.45pm, when a white Yamaha scooter was being ridden from Chatham towards Maidstone when, for reasons unknown, the scooter mounted the pavement and collided with a roadside sign.

"The rider, a 46-year-old man from Chatham, died at the scene.

"He was wearing a dark coloured crash helmet with a yellow reflective vest over a dark coloured coat."
