A school has carried out a deep clean after a pupil was found to have coronavirus.

Rivermead School in Gillingham has written to parents after the case was confirmed this week, outlining the steps taken to prevent a spread of infection.

The school says it remains open and that any child or member of staff who was not been in contact with the pupil affected should continue to attend as normal.

Those who have been in close contact are urged to self-isolate for 14 days.

Head teacher Frances Akinde said she had been in touch with the child, who showed no symptoms.

She wrote to parents today: "As you are aware, yesterday we advised Public Health England that there has been a confirmed case of Covid-19 within the school in one of our bubbles.

"The kind well wishes that we have received so far for the learner at this difficult time have been passed on. I have spoken to the learner in particular personally today and thankfully, they continue to show no symptoms."

She continued: "To reassure you, the actions that we took yesterday were as follows:

"We immediately closed the bubble and relocated learners to our isolation bubble.

"All areas that the child may have had contact with were immediately deep cleaned.

"All parents who had children within that bubble where phoned to collect their children.

"We then followed this up with a letter specifically to parents of children within that bubble to inform them of the current situation and provide advice on how to support their child.

"We also sent out a separate letter to all parents within our school community to notify you of the case."

The letter added: "I must reassure you that we have followed the national guidance by quickly identifying all learners and staff that had been in close contact with the affected child. In line with the national guidance, if you received notification that your child was in the bubble affected, we recommend that your child now stay at home and self-isolate until Friday 17th July 2020 (14 days after contact notification).

"If your child is well at the end of the 14 days period of self-isolation, then they can return to usual activities.

"Other members of your household can continue normal activities provided your child does not develop symptoms within the 14-day self-isolation period."

Rivermead is a community special school for young people aged 11 to 19 with complex needs, specialising in Autistic Spectrum Disorders and Asperger’s Syndrome.
