A Ministry of Defence Explosive team attended a residential street after a hand grenade had been discovered in a home.

Police was called at 9.42am to a report that an item, described as resembling an old hand grenade, had been discovered in a box at an empty property in Palmerston Road, Chatham.

A Ministry of Defence Explosive Ordnance Disposal team attended the scene and police set up a temporary cordon as a precaution.

A police cordon was up around the junction of Windsor Avenue and Symons Avenue.

A police officer on the scene said that the discovery was not suspicious and was Second World War memorabilia that can be bought legally.

Palmers Pharmacy and Jesse's Off Licence were closed while the police cordon was up, and the 164 bus between Chatham and Otterham Park was diverted.

The police cordon was removed at around 2.30pm, at which point the disposal team also left the area.
