A girl's school has asked two year groups to stay at home for the rest of the week.

Rainham School for Girls, in Derwent Way, made the decision because a number of staff members have been self-isolating meaning there are not enough teachers to "safely manage the school".

This comes following a number of positive Covid-19 cases.

Year 9 will stay home today and tomorrow, and Year 8 pupils have been asked to stay at home on Thursday and Friday.

In a letter addressed to parents, head of school, Vicky Shaw, said: "We have had a small number of positive cases in our school community and a small number of individuals who have been identified as a close or proximity contact by Public Health England.

"We now have a number of staff self-isolating including those who have been advised by the Government to work from home and we are anticipating that this could potentially rise further over the forthcoming days.

"We fully appreciate the disruption this may cause to families, but have no choice in these exceptional circumstances.

"As time goes on, there may be the need for other year groups to also work from home for short periods of time.

"We will ensure parents are notified as soon as the decision is made and apologise in advance for the disruption this may cause."
