Trains were halted due to a serious incident at a station.

A woman was treated by paramedics at Gillingham Railway Station with all services on the line suspended.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to Gillingham station at 3.25pm on Saturday following reports of a casualty close to the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended and a woman was taken to hospital for treatment to injuries which thankfully aren’t believed to be serious.”

Ambulance crews including paramedics from Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance Service helped the woman while Southeastern held trains at stations until the line could be reopened.

The road outside the station, in Railway Street, Gillingham was also closed in both directions, with traffic backing up.

Buses were diverted because of the road closure and some buses were reported to be stuck in the area.

The 101/182 services were diverted via Chatham Hill and the 175 was terminating at Medway Maritime Hospital.

Southeastern later updated to say paramedics and the person involved were leaving the railway and lines had re-opened.

But trains continued to be delayed by approximately one hour.

The services affected were the Victoria line - from Gillingham to Ramsgate and Dover, and the St Pancras line to Ramsgate via Faversham.

The nature of the incident is yet to be confirmed.
