Prepare yourself for an outrageous evening when the gin swigging, cigarette smoking and man hunting Lillian Bellamy comes to Medway on Friday.

Or rather, the actress behind The Archer’s character, Sunny Ormonde.

Sunny is bringing her one-woman show to The Oasthouse Theatre, Rainham, and has many behind the scenes stories about Lillian and the Radio 4 show.

She has been playing the character since 2000 and said: “She’s the character we would all like to be but aren’t always brave enough to be”

Sunny played two smaller roles in the radio soap before she was tipped off that Lillian would be returning to Ambridge.

Although she was told she might sound a little too young for the part, she went along to the auditions anyway.

“The night before I thought I’m not going to get this part so I’m just going to have fun with it,” she said. “I thought maybe a laugh would do it - there’s nothing subtle about it.”

That laugh has become synonymous with the character and Sunny added: “She’s been great fun to play, and I’ve had so many fantastic story lines.”

Her antics included riding around Ambridge on a Harley Davidson, drinking the Bull and Cider shed dry with Eddie Grundy, absconding to Costa Rica with her beloved Tiger or recklessly kicking off her sling-backs and leaping into bed with Tiger’s brother Paul - not to mention the knitting and the collagen.

Sunny said: “It’s so unusual to have a relationship with a character for so long. To be so close to a character is amazing and to be able to develop a character and know them inside out.

“She is my alter-ego, we are one and the same, I know how she will react in any situation thrown at her.”

The idea for the one-woman show came about when Sunny was performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the audience starting asking her questions as Lillian.

“It was outrageous and off the cuff,” she said. “It brought the house down.”

Sunny has been touring the show for three years and as her uncle lives near Tenterden she has performed in Kent before. But it is the first time she has been to Medway.

As well as Lillian, the show features characters Shirley Valentine, Laurie Lee and Winston Churchill, alongside a mix of poems and limericks.

There is also a question and answer session after the interval, with a prize for the most original question.

“It’s just a fun evening, so much variety in it and lots of laughs, that’s always good,” she said.
