Commuters are facing “significant delays” due to a signalling fault at a railway station.

There have been problems on the Gillingham line since 5.43am.

An initial post on X from Southeastern said: “Because of a fault with the signalling system at #GillinghamKent, services through this station may be delayed.

“Services from the depot at Gillingham are also affected.”

It meant the 5.40 train to Cannon Street in London had to be cancelled as a result of the fault.

Engineers were expected to get to the site at 7am, but they were delayed by 30 minutes.

It was reported that staff had arrived and finished carrying out repairs just after 7.50am.

The rail firm says trains may be altered while it tries to reduce hold-ups.

A spokesperson added: “Services through the Medway towns towards London remain significantly delayed.

“You can use your ticket on Thameslink services and underground between London terminals.”
