The SOS Bus in Medway

Medway Drug and Alcohol awareness week starts today aiming to raise awareness of the consequences of taking drugs and excessive boozing.

The SOS Bus will be travelling to town centres and schools across Medway as part of a five-day roadshow.
Visitors to the bus will be able to access the latest information on drug and alcohol support services, as well as more general advice.
Medway DAAT will also be visiting year 10 pupils at schools, along with drugs agency KCA YP, for a special quiz on the risks of drugs and alcohol. There will also be a stop at the Universities at Medway campus, Chatham Maritime.
Ch Supt Steve Corbishley, area commander for Kent Police in Medway and chairman of the Medway Community Safety Partnership, said: “The partnership is working closely with Medway DAAT to reduce drug- and alcohol-related crime and to raise awareness of the dangers of substance misuse.
“If you see the SOS bus on your travels this week, call in to speak to the team, especially if you are concerned about friends or family you think might be at risk.
“They have a wealth of knowledge and will be happy to give invaluable advice or point you in the direction of the wide range of services available.”
Cllr Mike O’Brien, Medway Council’s portfolio holder for community safety and enforcement, said: “I would encourage people to step on board the SOS Bus next week. It could be you know someone who might be taking or considering taking drugs or is excessively drinking.
“The advice could potentially save their life.”
The SOS Bus was launched in May 2009 to offer help and support to revellers in Rochester on weekend nights as well as being used during the day for tours and information.
