A campaigner is ecstatic after a speed camera has been reinstated on a road which attracts boy racers.

Vanessa Roach collected 200 signatures on a petition calling for the camera to be put back up on Frindsbury Hill.

She was also due to ask a question about the situation at a full Medway Council meeting tonight (Thursday) but the speed camera was returned yesterday.

Mrs Roach, who works at Williams chemist in Frindsbury Road, Strood, was approached by neighbours and customers who told her about speeding youths driving to Medway City Estate to race each other.

Despite police introducing dispersal orders to ease the problem, after the orders ran out the boy racers returned.

The camera was taken down in December, 2012, after a routine inspection found serious corrosion, but at the time, the council, which works in partnership with the Kent and Medway Safety Camera Partnership, did not have enough money to replace it.

Mrs Roach, who has lived in the area for 20 years, said: “It seems a bit of a coincidence it was reinstated just the day before the council meeting.

“I am ecstatic about the camera returning and it just goes to show people do have some power to get things changed and this will help save lives.”

It is understood the camera is an older type and has been put up as an interim solution until the entire camera network across the area is replaced with digital technology.
