A teenager had to be rescued after falling into the River Medway in freezing conditions.

The boy, who had got stuck in the mud near the Command House pub in Chatham, was helped ashore by firefighters in the early hours of this morning.

Paramedics treated him at the scene at around 4am before he was taken to hospital for further medical care.

Teams from Kent Fire and Rescue Service, ambulance, police and Sheerness RNLI responded to the rescue operation.

Three fire engines and the water safety unit attended, and crews wearing dry suits rescued the casualty from the water, who was passed into the care of SECAmb.

The UK Coastguard then called on the RNLI'S all-weather lifeboat to assist two people on board a narrow boat which had broken down with engine problems near Upnor.

The crew arrived about 8.10am to deal with the immobilised vessel opposite at yacht moorings near Upnor Castle.

It was towed to Thunderbolt Pontoon in Chatham where it was secured about 20 minutes later.
