Detective Sergeant Lynn Lewis said: "We believe at the time the man sustained his injuries there were a number of people in the area who may have seen something which could assist our investigation.

"We ask that if you were in the Luton Road area at the time, and have not yet spoken to an officer, please contact Kent Police on 01634 792209 quoting 02-1059."

It is understood the teenager suffered a long deep gash from one side of his stomach to the other, cutting through the muscle wall and exposing his organs.

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said: "Ambulance crews in an ambulance and a car attended the scene and were joined at the scene by the air ambulance.

"The male patient was assessed and treated at the scene before being airlifted to Kings College Hospital with injuries including potential pelvic injuries."

It was initially thought that the teenager may have fallen from a bike.
