Latest figures show that symptomless testing in the Towns has found almost 500 people who had Covid without knowing.

The council and military set up special centres earlier this month to identify those unknowingly spreading the illness.

This afternoon it was revealed that of 23,776 participants, 446 of them – or 1.87% – were infected and told to isolate.

It comes as the area continues to be hard hit by high rates of the virus.

The latest figures show in the last seven days in all settings, 2,762 people tested positive in Medway and 58 people died.

The infection rate per 100,000 people is currently at 991.5 – meaning almost one 100 people have the virus.

As well as symptomless testing centres in Chatham, Chattenden, Rainham and Rochester, work has taken place at 12 secondary schools and retail areas.

Gillingham FC has also supported efforts at Mems Priestfield Stadium hosting a pop-up site.

Medway Council leader Cllr Alan Jarrett said: "Although we understand residents will be disappointed Medway is now in Tier 4, it is incredibly important we all continue to follow the latest government advice to protect our loved ones from the spread of coronavirus.

"Symptom-free testing is already helping to stop the spread of coronavirus and potentially saving lives.

"I would like to thank the military for their continued support and encourage eligible residents to book a test and join the fight against coronavirus."

Director of Public Health, James Williams, said: "Our latest results show just how vital symptom-free testing is, more than 400 critical workers and residents had the virus but weren't displaying any symptoms.

"Eligible residents will be contacted directly, and I would encourage them to book an appointment as soon as possible. We must all act now in the fight against coronavirus."

People taking the tests are told soon after whether they have the virus and given guidance on what to do next.
