The owner of a bungalow whose property was badly damaged when a suspected drink-driver lost control says he is just glad no one was hurt.

A Ford Fiesta came off the road in Berengrave Lane, Rainham, on Friday evening while the property was occupied and ploughed into the front wall damaging brickwork and breaking a front window.

After surveying the scene and boarding up the wall, the homeowner, who did not want to be identified, said the damage was caused to a spare bedroom which no one was in at the time.

He added: “It was a dull thud and I knew straight away what had happened. We can’t use the front door.

“I am just glad no one was injured.”

A 24-year-old woman was arrested after the accident which took place while the owner was at home in Berengrave Lane, Rainham, on Friday evening.

Police and firefighters were called at about 8.45pm, and it is believed the woman had been driving out of Childscroft Road, onto Berengrave Lane, when she lost control.

Her vehicle ploughed through a front fence and crashed into the property and the impact caused structural damage, bringing down a large part of the front wall of the building.

The house was occupied at the time but there were no injuries, including to the driver.

The front of the bungalow remained boarded up over the weekend which prevented the homeowner accessing his property via the front door.

The woman, who is from the Sidcup area, was released on bailed until January.
