A family farm is giving people the opportunity to add something different to their wedding – by bringing alpacas along.

Lower Bush Alpacas, in Cuxton near Rochester, offers a number of packages for people to make their wedding day a little more animal-friendly.

Director Jon Savage runs the farm with his wife Jemeela. They started offering alpaca weddings in June this year after someone rang up and inquired if it was something they did.

He said: "I said yes and I quickly knocked something up and put it on the website and it went from there.

"We offer a number of packages that are all different, but the most popular one is the 'mingling with alpacas' package which costs £500.

"It's quite a nice package and is easy for a lot of venues – we turn up in the alpaca wagon with two or three alpacas on lead ropes and halters, and they've all got a nice wreath around their neck or a bow tie."

Guests are given bags with grass pellets in to feed the alpacas, and the bride and groom can take them for a walk to get some great pictures.

Alpaca weddings are proving popular

"It really does make some of the pictures really magical, especially you're an animal lover," he said. "Everyone just loves them."

Packages start at £450 and go up to £700.

The couple got their first alpacas in July 2019, so are fairly new and are about to go into their fourth year in October.

Jon grew up at the farm, and now lives five minutes away with his wife and two children – Freddie, aged three, and six-year-old Harry.

He said: "All the surrounding areas where we walk the alpacas through the fields was my play area as a child, so it's even more magical that I'm now walking alpacas and running a business from here, especially with my two young kids."

They have done seven weddings so far, and have had great responses from guests.

He said: "It's just magical, it's something that we're really looking forward to doing next year on a slightly larger scale.

"We have about seven alpacas in rotation, so we don't put too much pressure on them, and have tried different ones out to see which ones are better at travelling."

Jon said that they operate in the Kent area, or within a 45-minute drive away.

"I worry, to be honest, because we turn up with the alpacas and it takes all the attention away from the bride," he said.

"But the people that book know that the alpacas are going to be a great thing for their wedding

"The reason that people book them is because they love animals – the pictures are just fantastic and it gives the guests something to talk about.

"The alpacas enjoy it too. They love meeting people and having a treat – it's just brilliant."
