Holocaust Memorial Day to be marked in Medway at Rochester Cathedral
Published: 18:00, 25 January 2020
People will come together on Monday to remember the millions of people who died during the Holocaust.
Memorial services are being held across the country, including the main one hosted at Rochester Cathedral, in Boley Hill, in the evening.
The public are invited to attend the event, which has been organised by Medway Council, Chatham Memorial Synagogue and the Medway Inter-Faith Action Forum.
The service will include presentations, readings and performances from the synagogue, cathedral, police, the inter-faith group, mayor of Medway, youth council and schools around the Towns.
It will take place at 6pm with refreshments available from 5.30pm.
Artwork created by pupils will be on display at the cathedral until Tuesday, February 4, for people to come and see.
The exhibition will then move on to Chatham Library in Dock Road, from Thursday, February 6 to Saturday, February 29 where it will remain on show.
Each year the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT) suggests a theme for services.
The theme for 2020 explores how genocidal regimes throughout history have deliberately fractured societies by marginalising certain groups and how these tactics can be challenged by individuals standing together with their neighbours and speaking out against oppression.
This year's memorial day marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz as well as the 25th anniversary of the genocide of Bosnia.
