Toys R Us in Chatham closing date revealed

The final closing dates of the remaining Toys R Us stores have been revealed.

Medway's store will close it's doors on Sunday April 22.

A closing down sale began last month and has seen prices dropped by up to 70%.

The US chain went into administration in February after bids to save the company were unsuccessful.

Toys R Us is said to be struggling internationally, and sought bankruptcy protection in the US and Canada last year.

The chain has previously admitted its 1980s-style warehouse stores had become tired, expensive and suffered particularly from online competition.

Last night, councillors approved plans for KFC and Aldi to be built on the site.

Royal London is the developer for the site at Horsted Retail Park and there was speculation that they would use the vacant site instead of

Asset manager, Yasin Sadiq, said: "Royal London has been anticipating the closure of the Toys R Us store at Horsted Retail Park for some time and this does not affect our proposal to deliver a comprehensive redevelopment of the site with new retail facilities.

"Our proposals will introduce two well-established brands with strong business models; the benefits that these new units can deliver, particularly in terms of the jobs they can bring to the area, are even more important given the challenging retail climate that the Toys R Us administration indicates.

"We are not in a position to speculate on the future of the Toys R Us unit and the final decision regarding who possesses the lease rests with the Administrator.

"However, we are very confident that other retailers will occupy the space, which would in turn complement our proposals and enhance the offering at Horsted Retail Park."
