Travellers move onto Beechings Playing Fields in Gillingham

Enforcement action has been started to remove travellers from a popular playing field.

A group of five vehicles moved onto Beechings Playing Fields in Gillingham last night.

Caravans arrived on Beechings playing fields on Sunday night

Kent Police says it was called at 10.35pm to reports of incursion on fields off Lower Twydall Lane.

Officers attended and the matter is currently being dealt with by landowner Medway Council.

Speaking this morning, its head of regulatory services, James Brown, said: “We are following a civil legal process to move the group on as quickly as possible.”

Ward councillor Hazel Browne (Lab) says she has spoken to the local authority and they were following the set procedure.

This includes a welfare check of the people who have moved onto the land in conjunction with the police.

Officers will then go to court for ask for an order telling the travellers to move on or risk legal action.
