Travellers have moved back onto a playing field just weeks after being evicted from the site.

Around half a dozen caravans turned up at Beechings Way recreation ground in Gillingham yesterday evening and more have joined them overnight.

Witnesses said they saw 4x4 vehciles being driven at the wooden fence posts around the park to gain access to the land.

There are thought to be around 15 caravans parked on the field, along with cars and vans.

Medway Council say they will be moved as quickly as possible.

Travellers were last on the site at the end of March when they pitched up around the community centre.

This time they have spread out across the playing field and have parked on the football pitches, around the hall and the children's play area.

There have been several other occasions in recent years when travellers have occupied the field.

In 2019, they turned up five times in a month.

Ian Gilmore, Medway Council’s head of regulatory services, said of the latest arrivals: “We are aware of the group and are following a civil legal process to move them on as quickly as possible.”
