Corporation Road in Gillingham shut after sink hole emerges during gas repair works

A road has been closed after a "two metre sink hole" emerged during gas repair works.

Corporation Road, Gillingham, was closed from 5pm yesterday evening after the surface gave way underneath a car.

Since July, gas firm SGN has been replacing underground metal pipes with a plastic alternative.

However, this appears to have caused a hole in the road and Graham Buckley's Renault Megane Estate was stuck on top of the gap.

The 54-year-old faced a tense wait this morning while workers moved his car and covered the cavernous pit.

Mr Buckley said: "All of the road was closed last night, the police were here and SGN staff were here. The hole is around two metres big.

"Everyone else has been told to move their vehicles and SGN staff have moved their vans off the street.

"There are lots of little holes in the road where the gas works have taken place.

"Now they will all have to be tested and refilled as the same thing could happen again.

"The hole goes under the road and there are concerns it has spread right to the middle.

"I am worried but I'm also a bit peeved, this hasn't been well organised and managers should not have let this happen."

The gas works improvements began on Monday, July 22 and are taking place across Brompton and Lower Gillingham.

The upgrade has cost £244,000 and is due to finish by Friday, November 1.

Kent Police confirmed it was called but said the incident was passed on to local highways teams.

KentOnline has attempted to contact SGN for comment.
