A lifeboat crew rescued two people who’d been cut off by the tide near a country park.

Sheerness RNLI volunteers picked up the casualties just off Motney Hill Nature Reserve in Rainham.

The Sheppey station’s inshore boat recovered the casualties and transferred them to the all-weather lifeboat before they were handed into the care of paramedics.

A spokesman for the Island’s RNLI service said: “Luckily they were able to raise the alarm with their mobile phone.

“No matter if you’re walking along the coast, angling from rocks, out on your kayak, or sailing further out to sea, having the means to call for help in an emergency can be the difference between life and death.

“In most cases, a mobile phone can be enough to call for help.”

The volunteer crew were already out taking part in a training exercise with the Coastguard.

An exhibition has opened this weekend to mark the RNLI’s 200th anniversary.

RNLI 200: The Exhibition is at the Historic Dockyard Chatham, featuring artefacts from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, until September.
