It’s time to get your rara skirts and your shell jackets out one more time as a popular 1990s nightclub venue hosts a closing party.

From General Levy launching Jungle music, to a full live gig from The Prodigy, Excalibur Nightclub in the King Charles Hotel had it all.

The venue started as the NAAFI club which hosted live music nights, and it became The Regency Night Club in November 1982.

It saw chart-toppers Salt n Pepa, Rick Astley and Bros make the trip to Gillingham for personal appearances.

In August 1989, Excalibur was launched. With a 7000W sound system, three technic turntables, 2,000 lights and 50 TV screens it was party central.

It even had a moving dance floor which revealed a swimming pool.

Excalibur closed in 1998 and it launched tribute nights to those including Madness, Jersey Boys and Take That.

The old nightclub venue is due to be knocked down next year, but there is still time for one last party. It will open its doors for the final time on Saturday, January 5 for an Ultra 90s night as a special tribute to Excalibur.

Excalibur barman Ross Hutchinson said: “I feel it was always a social hub and a significant pre-cursor to the superclubs. I’ve been to clubs like Fabric but really for me it was never quite as good as Excalibur.

“I feel that, given that all this seems only to exist in the memories of the many locals who frequented it, the history and legacy of the club, in its various guises, is worth documenting as a piece of local history before it’s gone.

“It’s with much nostalgic sadness that we learn that the old club building is to be demolished to make way for a new development. Such is the way of the world, I guess.”

Mr Hutchinson shared a post about Excalibur on his Facebook group Medway Miserablé and hundreds of people shared their favourite, and slightly tipsy, memories.

The venues final party will be an Ultra 90s dinner and live band night in tribute to Excalibur in the King Charles Hotel's Cavalier Suite.

The Saturday evening event is now sold out.
