University students have been told all work related to China has been suspended following the coronavirus outbreak.

The University of Kent, which has campuses in Medway and Canterbury, has postponed all study, research and work-related travel to the country.

The university's deputy vice-chancellor of education, Christina Hughes, said the decision had been taken following latest advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

She added: "The university is aware of the ongoing outbreak of coronavirus originating in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China.

"We will continue to closely monitor FCO, Public Health England and World Health Organisation advice, take measures accordingly and inform students and staff appropriately.

"Students and colleagues currently on short-term study, research or work visits abroad should follow the advice of their host university or employer and keep up to date with public health advice given by the government agencies in the country they are in."

Earlier this week the FCO warned against all but essential travel to mainland China and all travel to Wuhan City.

Some airlines, including British Airways, have suspended flights to and from the country.
