Families have been left devastated after their loved ones' graves were vandalised at a cemetery.

David Slate discovered his daughter’s grave was among those targeted at Woodlands Cemetery in Gillingham.

Mr Slate said: “I’m thinking about putting my own camera on the grave because I actually own the gravestone.

“I want it to constantly record to see what is happening, but I’m not sure if I’m allowed.”

Mr Slate has contacted Medway Council and police over the issue and posted pictures of the vandalised grave on Facebook to see if anyone else has experienced the same problem.

Gillingham south ward Cllr Dan McDonald (Lab) also saw his parents’ grave vandalised.

He said: “I feel disgusted and very saddened to think anyone would purposely damage someone’s grave.

“Vandals need to realise while they might be having fun vandalising graves, it is us - the families of our beloved ones who are buried - who are left hurting.

“Graves and accompanying sentimental ornaments were smashed during this appalling attack, which included my parents’ grave.

“One such memento destroyed was said to have left a family distraught and ‘absolutely outraged’ having been owned by the deceased.

“I would also like to make a wider appeal to parents to know where there kids are. Places like this are to be respected.

“Children should not be going into these cemeteries and causing damage.

“I am speaking to the council and police to see what can be done to strengthen security so this doesn’t happen again.”

The attacks happened earlier this month.
