A pensioner is angry about what he considers to be a slow
response after he reported rifle rounds he had found near his boat
home to police.

Grandfather Peter Drewett, 65, made the discovery on Saturday
and informed police immediately - but it wasn't until Monday that
the rifle rounds and handgun shells were removed by coastguards and
a Royal Navy bomb disposal uinit from the scene at Bramble tree
Wharf, Borstal.

Mr Drewett said: "We called the police straight away thinking of
everyone’s safety and they said they would send someone down when
they had someone spare. It is disgusting that nobody came down
sooner, we don’t know what else is down there, what would have
happened if we’d put a boat there and churned up the mud?"

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police were contacted just after
5pm on Saturday, August 29, by a member of the public who reported
that some ammunition had been found in mud by the River Medway,
close to Bramble Tree Wharf.

"Due to high call demands, patrols were unable to attend the
location immediately. The man was contacted just after 6.15pm who
advised police that the bullets were now being covered by the
incoming tide.

"The coastguard was subsequently contacted, who agreed to attend
the location and make contact with the member of the public. The
ammunition that was found at the site has since been removed."
