An eight-year-old schoolboy invited Theresa May to his house to advise her about recycling - and he got a reply.

Olly Bunton, of Bentley Close, Lordswood, was inspired to write a letter to the Prime Minister when he saw lots of litter around Medway.

After learning about recycling at his school - Swingate Primary, Sultan Road, Lordswood - he decided he needed to take action.

Olly said: “I’m very worried about what is happening in our planet.

“Did you know that one lorry load of rubbish goes into the ocean every day?

“I’ve asked for a litter picker for Christmas or my birthday which I want more than a mobile phone.”

A few weeks after sending the letter, Olly got a response from 10 Downing Street saying they were going to send his letter over to Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Olly said: “I was really surprised when I got the reply. Before I opened it I was thinking ‘am I going to her house or is she coming to mine?’

“It wasn’t quite what I thought the reply would be but I’m meant to get another letter coming from Michael Gove, but I highly doubt he’d come round to my house.”

Olly’s mum Tina said: “We’re unbelievably proud of him.

“Olly isn’t like a normal eight-year-old, he worries about adult things.

“He just wants to help everyone. If someone fell over, Olly would be the first person to help them up.”

Before trying to influence national politics, Olly is encouraging improvements in his school including a litter-pick day.

Olly added: “I think there needs to be at least two bins outside every shop in Lordswood.

“Not many people are recycling and I feel like I can spread the word and make everyone recycle because if not, the world will be extinct.

“On the way to school I see at least five pieces of litter on the floor.

“Hopefully when I’m on TV everyone will watch me. We can save the planet and it will be good news again.

“I would like to talk to Medway councillors about it too so the whole of Medway can start litter picking.”
