An in-demand charity which celebrates diversity and supports the disadvantaged is hoping to create Kent’s first cultural centre.

Medway African and Caribbean Association (MACA) has launched a £100,000 fundraiser to help either buy or lease a building in the Towns to deliver its vision.

Chairwoman of MACA, Carol Stewart

Chairwoman of MACA, Carol Stewart said: “There is a rich black history across Kent and Medway.

“The centre will house a performing arts space, recording studios, a cultural archive, spaces for health and well-being, space for our senior citizens and young people.”

Unlike other areas of the UK, the county does not have a centre dedicated to African and Caribbean archives.

MACA has been promoting African and Caribbean culture in Kent for nearly 40 years.

Through the arts, education, and partnership working, the Medway-based charity promotes diversity and inclusivity.

The plan for MACA's cultural centre

Last month, they charity held their annual Young Black achievers award which garnered support from councillors, emergency services and soul singer, Jaki Graham.

MACA also works closely with the NHS for its volunteer champions campaign to encourage community members to donate blood and organs.

As well as its inclusion achievements, the not-for-profit has helped those who are most disadvantaged within the community.

MACA hopes a new centre will enable it to reach more people.

Anyone who would like to donate to the fundraiser can do so here.

Carol added: “There’s more demand for our services but no permanent base to grow.

“Please give whatever you can, no matter how big or small, every little helps.”
