Roadworks in Medway are set to cause weeks of misery for drivers.

There were huge queues getting off the Medway City Estate last night leaving motorists stranded in their cars.

The hold ups coincided with the start of drainage works on the A289 Wainscott Bypass.

One lane is closed on the northbound side all the way to the M2 junction from the Four Elms Roundabout.

Kent Highways - the transport arm of Kent County Council - says it will be carrying out the work until October 14.

Many drivers have taken to Twitter complaining to the council about a lack of advanced notice.

KCC says the works are due to be finished by 7pm on October 14.

They have warned drivers to "allow extra time for your journey".

Workers on the industrial estate trying to get out were stuck in nose-to-tail queues as traffic backed up on to the roundabout joining Anthony's Way with the A289.

The lane closure on the bypass also led to major delays through Strood town centre this morning.

Further works to Rochester New Bridge will be carried out overnight for the next two weeks.

Lane closures on the route connecting Strood High Street and Corporation Street started yesterday and will last throughout this week until Friday, September 27.

They will continue from Monday, September 30 to Friday, October 4.

There will also be an overnight single lane closure on Old Bridge for one week from Monday, September 30.

The works will be carried out from 9pm to 5am.
