Rumours are rife about the future of one of Medway's oldest pubs which has remained closed for two years.

When last orders were called at the once-popular Hen and Chicks in Luton, the brewery launched a bid to find a manager.

But with nobody coming forward, the High Street hostelry was put on the market.

Since then, signs indicated a Turkish restaurant might be taking over the building which dates back to 1702.

And now, according to social media, it could be turned into a halal butchers.

Originally a farmhouse, the Hen and Chickens to give it its full name, was converted into an ale house in 1746.

In the heart of what was known as the village of Luton, it was frequented by brickmakers and agricultural workers in the surrounding area.

As Chatham grew in size, it was a terminus for the bus horse, and later on, the tram.

Over the decades most of the once numerous pubs in Luton, which were used by dockyard workers and servicemen, have closed with many converted into homes.

In its heyday, the Hen and Chicks became a focal point for community activities.

It is understood the former long-term licensee died a few years ago and a family member took over after his death.
