Woman hit by train between Rochester and Gillingham

A woman is fighting for her life after being hit by a train.

Emergency services were called to Chatham railway station at 11.40am after reports of a casualty on the tracks.

The victim was treated at the scene for injuries described as life threatening.

She was taken to hospital by Kent Air Ambulance and is said to be in a serious but stable condition.

The train station was closed but re-opend at around 1.40pm.

Trains between Rochester and Rainham, running in both directions, were being held.

Southeastern and Thameslink, who operate services on the route, said the train line has reopened and they are working on returning the service to normal.

Two fire engines and three ambulances were on the scene and the station forecourt was cordoned off, with police advising passengers to use buses instead.

An air ambulance also landed in Fort Pitt School, in Fort Pitt Hill, Chatham.

Police were seen entering the station carrying evidence bags.

Passengers were being told to travel to Gravesend in order to get on trains to London and were also advised the station was likely to remain closed until the middle of the afternoon.

A rail replacement bus running between Rochester and Gillingham was running from 1pm.

South East Coast Ambulance spokesman Rich Airey said they had been called to platform two, coastbound, at around 11.40am to reports a person had been struck by a train.

He said ambulance crews attended, along with the Hazardous Area Response Team.

The patient, a woman, had suffered serious injuries and was being airlifted to King's College Hospital in London.

British Transport Police say it is not treating the incident as suspicious.
