Yobs Curtis Pennellls and Andrew Spencer locked up after hurling a brick and bottles onto Hoath Way, Hempstead

Two yobs who put motorists in danger by throwing missiles onto a busy road from a bridge have been sent to jail.

Drunk on stolen beer, Curtis Pennells and Andrew Spencer hurled a brick and a bottles onto Hoath Way in Hempstead, Gillingham.

The brick thrown by Pennells, 20, hit a Ford Fiesta car driven by terrified Jean Rothery. Damage was caused to the car.

A bottle thrown by Spencer, 24, hit a button on a bus causing the door to open, There were no passengers but the driver was forced to swerve and was shaken by the experience.

Sentencing Spencer to two years and nine months and Pennells to two-and-a-half years, Judge Julian Smith told them: “This was so utterly mindless. Your behaviour was dreadful. It was brutish, loutish, drunken behaviour.”

Pennells, formerly of Trench Road, Tonbridge, and Cecil Road, Rochester, and Spencer, of Tonbridge Road, Maidstone, admitted causing danger to road users.

Pennells also admitted damaging the Ford Fiesta and two offences of theft. Spencer also admitted criminal damage, damaging property, assault and theft.

Maidstone Crown Court heard the pair had been stealing from shops, including the Coop at Hempstead and Fairview off-licence, on July 30 last year.

They were followed by concerned Jodie Franks as they headed to the bridge.

“She showed determination and presence of mind, and not a little courage to two drunken young men engaged in yobbery,” said the judge.

“She kept others informed about what you did. What she witnessed was extraordinary.”

Pennells threw the brick and they both tossed a bottle from the bridge onto the dual carriageway, causing chaos below.

Judge Smith said it was fortunate nobody was injured and substantial damage was not caused to vehicles driving at speed.

Jean Rothery was “astonished and understandably terrified” by the brick landing on her car.

Spencer struck the bus causing the door to open. It was good fortune it was empty apart from the driver, said the judge.

Afterwards, as they walked past a Vauxhall Zafira Spencer struck it causing £400 worth of damage.

He became violent, assaulting a PC, when arrested. He then urinated on the floor of a police car and damaged a cell.
