Firefighters had to cut the roof off a car to rescue a young driver who was trapped after a crash on a rural road.

A crew from Medway station and a crew from Strood were called to Cuckolds Green Road, off the Ratcliffe Highway on the Hoo Peninsula, at 10.20pm yesterday.

The driver, who is believed to be in his early 20s, was trapped in the small hatchback with suspected back injuries.

The firefighters used the jaws of life - hydraulic cutting equipment - to remove the roof and rescue the driver. He was placed on a spinal board and taken to Medway Maritime Hospital by ambulance.

A spokesman from Medway station said it was thought that the driver had lost control on the bend.

The crews were at the scene for around an hour. Police were also in attendance.
