More than 50 schools took to the pitch for a belter of a cricket tournament in the sunshine.

The Mini Youth Games Kwik Cricket competition took place at High Halstow Cricket Club on a scorching hot day.

By the end of a sweltering session on the field, three schools were unbeaten and tied on points, so it came down to runs difference to separate them.

The winners, St Mary's Island Primary School

The winning school was St Mary’s Island, with Academy of Woodlands in second place and Bryony School coming in third.

The best placed small school was High Halstow and the fair play award went to Saxon Way.

The event was hosted by the cricket club and supported by volunteer young leaders from Rainham Mark Grammar School.

The event is part of the Mini Youth Games series

There was a pause in play at 11am to observe a minute’s silence for the Manchester terror attack victims.

A council spokesman said: “The schools gathered in their team groups for it. They all observed it beautifully and respectfully.”

The penultimate event of the MYG series is football on Tuesday. It had to rescheduled because of the general election as it was originally due to take place today (Thursday). It will be at Anchorians FC in Gillingham.
